Free parking is to be introduced to Bingley in a bid to boost business.

From this weekend, shoppers can enjoy free parking every Saturday until Ireland Bridge re-opens in the summer.

On weekdays every parking ticket bought will include an extra hour waiting time free of charge.

The changes will cover the car parks in Ferncliffe Road, Main Street, Queen Street and Victoria Street.

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, Bradford Council’s executive member for environment and culture, said: “We recognise that the continued closure of Ireland Bridge is making things tougher for businesses in Bingley.

“While the essential work to strengthen the historic bridge goes on, the parking concessions introduced by Bradford Council will give people that added incentive to make the detour worthwhile and give Bingley shops a boost.”

Bingley Chamber of Trade president Jamie Illingworth welcomed the move.

Work started on the 17th century Grade II-listed Ireland Bridge, which carries the B6249 Harden Road over the River Aire, in January. It is due to reopen in July as a two-lane bridge.
