Fresh light on watercolours

Exhibition programmer Alison Morton examines Soldiers at Rye 1941 by Edward Burra at Sheffield's Millennium Gallery yesterday in preparation for a new exhibition.

"Watercolour in Britain: Tradition and Beyond", also features works by JMW Turner and William Blake.

It opens on Thursday, June 17 and will run until September.

Paintings on show are drawn from the collections of Tate, Museums Sheffield, the Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service and Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums.

A spokesman for Museums Sheffield said: "The story of watercolour in Britain has largely celebrated a much-loved, traditional approach to the medium.

"Yet watercolour has been used in many ways by many different cultures over the centuries, each suggesting contrasting ideas about art, expression and technique."

The Millennium Gallery is open from 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and from 11am to 5pm on Sundays. Admission is free.
