Frigate sails into culture city as Katy sets course for concert date

A ROYAL Naval frigate, HMS Iron Duke, sailed into Hull yesterday for a four-day visit as part of the city's UK Capital of Culture celebrations.

The ship arrived in support of Royal Navy & Royal Marines recruitment in the region.

The affiliation between city and ships of the same name dates back to 1870. The current HMS Iron Duke, which was commissioned in 1993, was granted the honour of Freedom of the city of Kingston upon Hull in 1994.

There will be a parade and march today starting in Trinity Square at 2.30pm led by the Band of The Royal Armoured Corps.

On completion of the inspection of the ship’s guard the ship’s company will march up North Church Side and left on to Lowgate during which time the salute is to be taken by the Lord Mayor, Coun Sean Chaytor.

The ship is berthed in King George’s Dock at ABP Hull commercial port, a few minutes from the City Centre for the duration of the visit.

Members of the public will be able to step onboard tomorrow from 10am to 4pm.

Meanwhile, Katy Perry joked about her “English boyfriends” as the American star announced she will headline Radio 1’s Big Weekend in May.

The Chained To The Rhythm singer, who recently split from Orlando Bloom and was previously married to Russell Brand, will take to the stage in Hull at the event’s Saturday night slot.

The star, 32, told Radio 1 Breakfast Show host Nick Grimshaw that she wanted to visit the city’s Yorkshire pudding factory.

Little Mix, Kings Of Leon and Stormzy have previously been announced for Radio 1’s annual event on May 27 and 28.
