Funding for Lord Mayor’s residence

A LONG-STANDING bid to promote the official residence of the Lord Mayor of York has received a major financial boost after being awarded Lottery funding.

The project overseen by York Council aims to give the Mansion House a more secure future in terms of its financial stability, as well as increasing visitor numbers to the 18th century townhouse. The Heritage Lottery Fund has provided £75,500 to help the council advance its plans to apply for a full grant at a later date. The initial grant will fund work including developing plans with architects and specialist conservators.

The council’s deputy leader, Coun Tracey Simpson-Laing, said: “Over almost 300 years, this beautiful building has witnessed many significant events and welcomed many Lord Mayors and Sheriffs. Now this grant sets us on the road towards orchestrating the most comprehensive restoration of the Mansion House since its completion in 1732.”

The project involves restoring the kitchens and improving displays and access to the civic collection of gold and silver ware, as well as developing a conservation plan for the structure and preparing an oral history project.

The Mansion House’s foundation stone was laid in 1725, and the building was finished seven years later. The office of the Lord Mayor in York is the second oldest in the country after London.
