Fundraiser set to create a real buzz

After more than a decade raising money for charity, indefatigable fundraiser Jean Bishop is making a beeline for Olympic Torch duty.

Mrs Bishop, 90, sports a home-made bumblebee outfit, including woolly yellow and black hat and antennae, when she goes out collecting money for Age UK. To date the “Bee Lady of Hull” has raised more than £86,000.

The great-grandmother will carry the Torch between Ellesmere Avenue and Maybury Avenue in east Hull on Monday.

Despite having rheumatoid arthritis in her knees, she says she will cover the 300m with an “Olympic crawl” if needs be.

She said: “I can’t do any trotting; I will have to walk slowly because my knees hurt.

“My daughter said determination and willpower will pull you through. But I am hoping my legs don’t give way.”
