Gallery adds to cat trail for tourists on the prowl for art

THE cat has been let out of the bag in York following the unveiling of a new sculpture that forms part of a historical feline-themed walking tour.

The white cat, created by the Yorkshire artist Jonathan Newdick, marks the start of the trail outside the Cat Gallery on Low Petergate.

The now popular trail was devised last year by Keith Mulhearn, owner of the York-based tour company, Complete Yorkshire.

Altogether 18 cats are dotted around the city in various guises, including sculptures and carvings. Many can be seen on the buildings designed by the late York architect Tom Adams, who used to sign his drawings with a black cat.

The trail caught the attention of Peter and Alison Hanson, owners of the Cat Gallery, and the couple joined forces with Mr Mulhearn.

Mr Newdick was commissioned by the couple to create a new cat sculpture – many years after his original designs for Tom Adams – and the trail was revised with the shop as the staring point.

Mr Mulhearn said: “It was really fun to write and has been fantastic to receive feedback from so many people who have followed and enjoyed the trail. I’m positive that now the Cat Gallery is involved, the trail will become a very popular addition to the city’s list of things to do for tourists and residents.”
