Gallery exhibition focuses on Yorkshire street life in 1980s

The pictures were taken in the 1980s by David Arnison, an amateur photographer who lived in the Morley area at the time.

His Faces and Places photos are on show at Huddersfield Art Gallery until March 17

Mr Arnison recalls: “Some of the photographs on display here were taken more than a quarter of a century ago.

“I would occasionally wander down through the Batley and Dewsbury area from my home in Morley, looking to capture the urban landscapes and the diverse and friendly characters to be found therein.

“This was before deregulation and for a small sum, one could travel for miles within West Yorkshire, using the public transport system. I would visit places further afield, like Halifax, Huddersfield and Hebden Bridge, in order to find new subjects. Morley to Halifax all for 30p.”

The exhibition was recently on display at Dewsbury Museum where it was well received, with comments including: “It gives much inspiration to a young photography student” and “How clever to catch so much life and expression in each picture. What a story they tell.”

The exhibition is on the top floor of the library at Princess Alexandra Walk.
