Gamers blamed as shock military images are posted on Yorkshire village website

THE posting of shock images of a Turkish army special forces unit on a Yorkshire village internet noticeboard has been exposed as a prank – probably played by computer gamers.

Villagers were bemused when clips of the Turkish Maroon Beret soldiers training with weapons appeared on the Baildon village website, which was set up to promote local sights, walks, and wildlife habitats.

The identity of the crack unit was most likely pinched by the hackers as an online nickname.

Steve Brumby, vice chairman of the British Computer Society West Yorkshire, the Chartered Institute for IT, said: "Within various internet groups elite identities are often used as names for the virtual groups or handles for individuals.

"This was most likely a prank by a member or members of an internet gaming group of a similar name.

"On this occasion, there's probably no more harm caused than an annoyance to the website manager and the few of the Baildon community who accessed the site whilst the site was compromised.

"This does, however, remind all of us of prudent internet security measures we should all be using."

Baildon Parish Council chairman Paul Marfell, also the webmaster for baildon.org.uk, who discovered the problem, said he now wished he had not said anything and avoided giving the hackers extra publicity.

"Thousands of websites are hacked each day. So I was bit surprised this had attracted so much attention. This particular group is credited with hacking 1,300 sites since July last year."

The computer society runs presentations and events which

are open to the public and there are usually several events a year on

security. See its website http://www.westyorkshire.bcs.org/
