Gang grabs £40,000 jewellery haul

JEWELLERY and watches valued at about £40,000 were stolen by a gang who smashed their way into a shop in Rotherham.

The thieves broke into The Gold Den jewellers and Lionel's Watch Shop, which share the same premises in the town's Riverside Precinct.

A police spokesman said the men responsible got in through the roof and stole gold chains, bracelets, rings and earrings from the Gold Den. They then moved on to take several high-value watches from Lionel's before making their escape.

Many of the items of jewellery stolen were made on the premises and detectives said they would carry the AH hallmark. Some items also carry the badge of Rotherham United FC or the letters RUFC.

Detectives said the raid took place between 1.45am and 2.30am on Good Friday. They examined CCTV pictures.

Anyone offered any of the stolen jewellery or watches, or who has information about the raid, is asked to call DC Iain Martin at Rotherham CID on 01709 832262 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Police also want to hear from jewellery dealers offered suspect items.
