Garrison’s families get online bargains

A GROUND-BREAKING money-saving system – the first of its kind in the country – has been introduced at Catterick Garrison to help Army families suffering during the recession and amid the biggest round of defence cuts since the Second World War.

The online scheme, spearheaded by ABF – The Soldiers’ Charity, offers families cash-back savings on everyday purchases and features a private deals section where people can trade goods.

If successful in the North Yorkshire garrison, the largest in Europe, it will be introduced at other UK military bases.

Lieutenant Colonel Brian de la Haye, regional director for ABF – The Soldiers’ Charity, said: “This is an exciting new project for The Soldiers’ Charity in Yorkshire which has the potential to create a win-win situation, offering soldiers and their families the chance to save money on a wide variety of popular services and products while promoting the charity.”

Ministry of Defence chiefs have embarked on the biggest round of cuts to the military since the end of the Cold War, and are now recruiting to an Army of 83,000 compared with one of 102,000 two years ago.

The online system –http://catterick.dosh4free.com – has been developed by a multi-national team of software coders from Purepages Group, near Manchester. It should also boost local businesses by encouraging people to shop locally in Catterick, Richmond and Bedale.
