Gas supply helps tackle fuel poverty for 200 estate homes

More than 200 homes in Hull will soon be enjoying gas central heating and instant hot water for the first time, thanks to the start of a major project aimed at tackling fuel poverty across the North of England.

Social landlord Riverside has joined forces with gas distribution firm Northern Gas Networks and community interest company Community Energy Solutions to extend the gas network to more than 200 of its properties on the North Bransholme estate in Hull, which are currently without a mains gas supply.

A total of 1,184 homes on North Bransholme were transferred from Hull Council control to the Liverpool-based Riverside Group Ltd last November.

Private homeowners in the area will also be offered free gas connections and help with gas central heating and other major energy efficiency improvements as part of the project.

Sophie Cavanagh, strategic affordable warmth officer for Riverside, said: “The scale of the work being undertaken at Bransholme is testament to Riverside’s commitment to improving the energy efficiency of its properties for the benefit of its tenants and the community as a whole.”

The gas infrastructure element of the North Bransholme project is under way and the scheme is expected to be completed by the end of August.

The scheme is being funded by the Government-backed Community Energy Saving Programme, designed to improve efficiency and reduce fuel bills in the UK’s most deprived areas, and £155,000 funding from Northern Gas Networks’ network extension project.
