Geoff Humble, chairman of Wetherby in Bloom

As the chairman for 25 years of Wetherby in Bloom, Geoff Humble, who has died at 75, worked tirelessly to help create the floral displays for which the town was noted.

Upon stepping down just this summer, he cited among his proudest achievements winning the European Entente Florale gold award and the International Communities in Bloom championship.

Born in Newcastle, he moved to Wetherby in 1971, during his 33 year employment with BT.

His community work began with the Scouts, but he took early retirement following the death of his eldest son, Ian, in a car accident.

Believing he had to work as hard post-career as during it, he went to Leeds University and completed a psychology degree, then taught for a decade at what is now Leeds Beckett University.

At the same time he took on the chairmanship of the Wetherby “bloomers”, and oversaw the preparation of a multitude of award-winning displays.

In 2008 he was named Townsperson of the Year.

He was also a member of 26 years standing of a guitar group, playing at beer festivals and the like.

Mr Humble was a founder member of Welcome to Wetherby in 2012. Its chairman, Cindy Bentley, called him “a doer rather than a talker”.

He is survived by his wife Mildred, daughter Kay and son Craig, and by grandchildren Calum, Olivia, Brooke and Nai’a.
