Glamorous foursome bring classics to life

ALl-girl string quartet Bond will perform at this year’s East Riding “Proms”.

Cellist Gay-Yee Westerhoff, who was born in Hull, Tania Davis (violin), Eos Chater (violin), Elspeth Hanson (five string violin/viola) – who have sold more than 4m records – will join the Classics Concert Orchestra and guest soloists at Classics in the Park in July.

Organisers are hoping for a sell-out audience of 3,000 at Brantingham Park on July 14.

Committee member Liz Wilson said: “We are very lucky to have them. We spoke to their agent and she was a bit reluctant initially, but when she spoke to the girls Gay-Yee Westerhoff was particularly interested in doing a local event, especially as in the orchestra many of the people are the musicians she learned from.”

Gay-Yee is one of the many successes of Hull’s music service. She was given cello lessons free at Highlands Primary School, Bransholme, and later Amy Johnson Secondary School, both in the city. She then joined the Hull Youth Orchestra.

If the 3,000 show up, an impressive £25,000 to £30,000 will be handed over to local charities, the Dove House Love you 2 Appeal and the Daisy Appeal’s PET-CT scanner fund and the Teenage Cancer Trust. An extended programme begins at 4pm with local acts.

Tickets costing £25 in advance are available through the Classics in the Park website or from the Hull City Hall box office and Cottingham and North Ferriby post offices.
