Go For It...Ennis launches a summer of sport for children

WORLD champion heptathlete Jessica Ennis has lent her support to a programme of summer activities aimed at getting children involved in sport over the school holidays.

Ennis launched Sheffield Council's Go For It programme earlier this week, which offers hundreds of ideas to young people across the city, who are looking to stay occupied.

The authority said it had organised a "huge choice" of organised sport and play sessions in all parts of the city, many of them free or low cost, including cricket, football, dance and basketball.

Specialist play rangers will organise some sessions while other staff will travel the city in Activity Sheffield sports vans to help young people set up their own events in their communities.

Among new activities on offer this summer are dodgeball, dance, martial arts and lots of competitions. There are also Let's Dance sessions where children can try out cheerleading or street dance.

Coun Roger Davison, Sheffield Council's cabinet member for culture, sport and tourism, said: "We have organised activities in all parts of the city and the Go For It! programme is split into the seven community assembly areas to make it even easier to find fun activities close to where you live.

"I would encourage children and parents to get a copy of the programme now – they will be amazed at the choice of activities on offer.

"We also organise loads of great activities in the city's parks by the Rangers such as grass sledging, survival skills and climbing ropes or studying wildlife, painting and kite making. There's really is something for everyone this summer."
