Gorgeous Regency house for sale

Chartered surveyor and retired estate agent Peter Burrans visited and admired many beautiful homes as part of his profession but this handsome Regency house stole his heart. He first spotted it as a schoolboy.“The school bus used to drive past this house and I loved it. I always fancied living here,” he says. When The Red House came on the market, he immediately arranged a viewing and found that the interior was just as impressive as the exterior. There was no hesitation. He bought the property and has lived there since 1986.

The wow factor

“When I first walked in I saw the mouldings and the fabulous staircase with the wonderful Georgian windows at the top. I fell in love with the house and also with Riccall,” says Mr Burrans. The Red House is a Grade II listed building which sits in the heart of old Riccall village, which is nine miles south of York.It was constructed in the 1840s and is mentioned by Pevsner in his “Buildings of England” architectural guides.A large part of the property’s charm is that although it has been very well maintained, it has never been “completely modernised” in line with the latest trends and so its period features and its layout remain intact.

Edward Hartshorne, of Blenkin and Co. estate agents, which is marketing the property, says: “It was formerly the gentleman doctor’s house with his consulting room and patients’ entrance still in evidence.“The house sits well in its large, mature gardens next to the village church.“The current owner has been in residence for more than 30 years, and this glorious family house is now ready for the next chapter in its illustrious history.”

The Red House also includes a separate coach house. The property has entrance and staircase halls, two reception rooms, a kitchen breakfast room with Aga, a pantry, utility room, study, w.c., four bedrooms and a house bathroom. It is set in a third of an acre of gardens, including a kitchen garden and an orchard. The detached coach house acts as a sizeable garage with outside steps leading to the first floor.Although no planning has been sought by the current owners, the building could make a studio flat or holiday cottage, subject to the necessary consents.
