Graffiti daubed on historic Clifford’s Tower

POLICE have launched an investigation after graffiti was daubed on one of York’s most famous landmarks.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested after the graffiti was painted on Clifford’s Tower, which is a remaining part of the city’s medieval castle.

Only hours earlier, North Yorkshire Police had been contacted about similar criminal damage to the nearby crown court.

The defacing of Clifford’s Tower was reported at about 11.50am on Friday last week, although police only released details yesterday.

PC Simon Fennell, who is involved in the investigation, said: “It is upsetting that someone would see fit to deface one of the city’s historic monuments and we are keen to bring those responsible to justice.”

The 31-year-old suspect was yesterday in police custody while inquiries were continuing.
