The Great Escape revisted in RAF challenge
The Great Escape is a 1963 war film based in a German PoW camp starring Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Donald Pleasence and James Garner.
Directed by John Sturges, it was and based on the book by Paul Brickhill, who was actually involved in the real-life break-out, about the exploits of the prisoners in Stalag Luft III.
The film was nominated for one Oscar in 1964, for best film editing. It did win Steve McQueen the best actor award at the 1963 Moscow Film Festival. A popular classic, the film remains most famous for its theme and for the scene where McQueen tries to jump a barbed wire fence on a motorbike.
