Grey, but white all over

Rare albino grey squirrels have been sighted in Guisborough Forest on the edge of the North York Moors.

The Forestry Commission said the creatures have white instead of grey fur because of a rare genetic mutation – and the international Albino Squirrel Preservation Society has been set up to help protect the creatures.

The sightings come as the Forestry Commission and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council get ready to celebrate other natural wonders by staging a series of school holiday wildlife events at the 900-acre beauty spot.

Ranger Cath Brason said: "The forest is a fabulous place for wildlife and hums with activity in the summer. We want to celebrate and give kids chance to lean more about the environment while having a fantastic time."

The events will include craft demonstrations and quizzes to stimulate the powers of observation, the organisers said.
