Gun salutes mark Duke’s 91st birthday

GUN salutes will be fired at noon today to mark the Duke of Edinburgh’s 91st birthday.

A 21 gun salute will be fired at York’s Botanical Museum Gardens by 5 Regiment Royal Artillery, while others will be held around the country including The King’s Troop’s 41-gun salute in Hyde Park and a 62-gun tribute by the Honourable Artillery Company at the Tower of London, both at midday.

Music will be provided by the Heavy Cavalry and Cambrai Band while Brigadier Greville Bibby CBE, Commander of 15 (North East) Brigade and York Garrison and the Lord Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne, Coun Jackie Slesenger will inspect the saluting troop which is based in Marne Barracks, Catterick.

The Prince spent yesterday recuperating at home after he was discharged from King Edward VII Hospital in central London on Saturday after five days being treated for a bladder infection.

His next scheduled engagement is tomorrow, when the Queen hosts a Jubilee garden party at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.
