Handy way to launch childcare unit

University of Leeds Professor David Sugden makes a hand-print after officially opening a new childcare centre at his university.

The 3.65m Bright Beginnings Childcare Centre offers 144 places for children aged from three months to five years, as well as offering a holiday play scheme for 56 children. To mark its opening a time capsule was buried containing memorabilia including, photographs, books and cast hand prints, chosen by the children. It will be unearthed after 25 years when children and staff will be invited back for a reunion.

The centre, on campus, is open to staff, students and conference delegates at Leeds University, and also has a limited number of places allocated for the public.

Prof Sugden, a professor of special needs education, was responsible for forming the original Bright Beginnings over a decade ago.
