Health centre road plan opposed by neighbours

AN opponent of access plans for new health centre and housing development in a market town has pledged to fight on, despite accusations of being a “nimby”.

Matt Rice lives in Northgate Vale, in Market Weighton, which will be the way to a £3m health centre.

However, he and other residents say the “quiet and narrow” cul-de-sac could see 200 more “vehicle movements” an hour as users drive to the centre, which will house a pharmacy and outreach clinics. It will be built beside 49 homes, as part of the scheme by Lovel Developments.

Their petition against the development had reached 233 names yesterday. Mr Rice said: “We have been called the black sheep of Market Weighton, because they believe we should roll over. These people who are e-mailing saying I am a nimby would be doing the same as me if it was happening to them. There’s plenty of land where they can build it in Market Weighton and plenty of other access roads – I can’t stress enough that we want the medical centre, we just don’t want the access.”

Market Weighton Surgery has been seeking a new home for eight years.

Dr Richard Webster, who joined in 1981, said it was “crammed to the gunnels”, adding: “The amount of work we are doing has risen exponentially and continues to do so. I fully understand there are issues about access.

“We feel this is the one and probably only opportunity to secure the provision of a new health centre. It is pretty much now or never unless they want something on the very edge of town.”
