A healthy exercise

THE 11-day Easter and Royal wedding holiday has been an inadvertent blessing for one important section of society – all those people who have to drive to work on a road network that is rapdily becoming unfit for purpose during the morning and evening rush hours.

This daily commute became tolerable because there was significantly less traffic on the roads. The downside is that the normal frustrations will resume today as schools, and businesses, return from this extended break.

One reason is the sheer number of children who no longer walk to school. There are many factors behind this trend – safety, idleness and the extended distance that many youngsters now travel to attend lessons as parents seek the best possible education for their offspring.

Yet, if the concerns of the Living Streets campaign groups can be reconciled, the reward is a society that is slightly less car-dependent and a generation of young people who become accustomed to the benefits of regular exercise.
