Help for pupils to beat exam stress

A CHILDREN’S charity is urging teens to seek help if they feel stressed-out about their exams.

Last year the ChildLine base in Leeds received 175 contacts from young people about exam pressure and the organisation is keen to remind the city’s pupils that support is always available.

No matter how big or small their concerns – from fears they are going to fail or not achieve the grades they need for the job or course they want – ChildLine has trained counsellors on hand to ease their nerves and help them feel more in control. Gaynor Birnie, ChildLine service manager in Leeds, said: “The exam period can be a very stressful and anxious time for young people.

“We hear from lots of young people each year who are anxious, worried or panicking about their exams and revision.

“We want to let them know that they are not alone and that ChildLine is here to listen.”

Pupils in Leeds will be among the millions of under-18s sitting exams this summer.

So the child-protection charity has come up with top tips for both parents and children.

Youngsters are urged to take regular breaks from revising and ensure they exercise; go to bed at a reasonable time rather than trying to revise all night; try to think positively; and if possible, take some water into the test. Keeping hydrated helps you concentrate.

Youngsters can call ChildLine’s free confidential helpline on 0800 11 11 or go to www.childline.org.uk.

The website has a special ‘beat exam stress’ section.

Young people can also send emails to trained counsellors or receive support online through the one-to-one chat service.
