High price tag for 7ft tall sundial

A 7FT tall Victorian sundial which has been in the same Yorkshire village for 150 years could fetch up to £15,000 when it goes under the hammer at Christie’s in London on December 3.

The piece has stood in the grounds of a private property in Woodale, North Yorkshire, since being made by Abel Turner, who is listed in the 1851 census as a resident of the village.

The piece is one of the more unusual articles being auctioned in the Fire & Light sale.

Highlights include 24 lots of spectacular lighting from the Luton Hoo mansion in Bedfordshire, which was redesigned in 1903 by Charles Mewès and Arthur Davis, the architects of the Ritz Hotel.
