Marine Drive in North Bay, Scarborough, had to be closed as waves swept across the road, at high tide, dumping sand and other debris.

The winds have delayed the construction of Hull Fair’s biggest attraction - the towering 70m Starflyer.

James Mellors, director of Mellors Group, said: “In the 18 months we have owned this ride, this is the first time we have not been able to complete the build of the Starflyer in time for opening, so we are bitterly disappointed. However safety must come first, and with wind speeds predicted to increase over the next couple of days, it is just impossible to have the ride completed for the opening of the fair today.”

Forecasters predict winds will drop by Sunday and Mellors Group said it would continue work then, ready to open on Monday.

Met Office spokesman Dan Williams said: “It will stay fairly breezy into Sunday with gusts of 20mph.”

Forecasters predict light rain today, with a risk of heavier rain over the weekend, with the north and the west enjoying the best of the weather.
