Historians seek help to solve mystery location in old photo

LOCAL historians are asking for public help in identifying a mystery location in an old photograph.

As part of celebrations marking the centenary of Wilton Park and Bagshaw Museum, Batley, an exhibition of images went on view at a number of events over summer.

For Bagshaw Museum’s recent “birthday bash”, the Times Gone By in Wilton Park display of images from the Kirklees Image archive was enhanced by several photographs given by the public.

Plans are to turn the display into a properly mounted exhibition which will go on regular show at Bagshaw Museum and park events.

However, the public’s help is still needed to solve queries on two images.

One photo was taken by Mr JJ Stead but it is not clear where it was taken in the park.

Park warden Barry Daly said: “I thought I knew every inch of Wilton Park but I just cannot fathom out where this photograph was taken and it’s driving me mad. I wish someone would put me out of my misery.”

Historians are also seeking to find the original photo taken of 8th Batley Scouts Clive Moul and Harry Roberts testing their homemade raft on Wilton Park lake. It was taken around 1945.

The image is a photocopy but the original is now needed.
