Historic city buildings shown again in a very different light

THE Illuminate York Festival is set to be bigger and brighter than ever as its organisers gear up to shed light on 2,000 years of history in the city.

The popular festival, which attracted more than 60,000 visitors to York last year and is now seen as a vital fixture on the city’s annual calendar, takes place next month.

And following last year’s success, organisers are saying they will be pushing artistic and technological boundaries even further, operating the most powerful projectors ever used in the festival.

This year the central artwork will be on the Castle Museum, instead of York Minster.

Coun Sonja Crisp, York Council cabinet member for leisure, culture and social inclusion, said: “Over 60,000 people experienced Illuminating York in 2010 and we are confident that we will see as many again with this year’s mix of cutting edge technology, ghostly tours and a host of fringe events that promise to make this year’s festival the biggest and most spectacular yet.”

Gillian Cruddas, chief executive of Visit York, added: “This nationally acclaimed festival breathes light and innovation into York’s historic buildings and offers visitors the chance to see York in a different light.”

The festival runs from October 26 to October 29 from 6.30pm to 10pm every night.
