Historic election for women

A Beverley election steeped in ancient tradition will soon take place at Beverley's Guildhall – and for the first time women will be allowed to stand and vote.

The election for 12 new Pasture Masters and two Auditors, who look after Beverley's three areas of common land, Westwood, above, Swinemoor and Figham will be held between 9am and 4pm on Tuesday March 1.

Thanks to an Act of Parliament, daughters are now allowed to inherit the title from their fathers, and a second Act has extended the boundaries beyond Beverley to Molescroft and Woodmansey.
