Historic hall goes back in time for half-term visitors

Staff at the historic hall, near York, are putting on the series of traditional activities inspired by the Victorian era designed to celebrate the magic of childhood.

Events include story-telling, new hidden garden trails and art workshops for youngsters to make their own Victorian toys such as spinning tops, skipping ropes, hoop and stick and kites.

Visitor services manager Joanne Parker said: “Everyone knows there is a fantastic Georgian mansion at Beningbrough but now is a great time to discover the untold stories of the Victorian age here.

“People can come and join a tour to explore the seldom-seen below stairs spaces or play a nostalgic game of hoop and stick.

“Take the time to discover the beautiful gardens and enjoy a talk with one of the gardening team to learn about the Victorian influences in the walled garden and conservatory.”

Beningbrough Hall was built in 1716 and is one of the county’s most famous stately homes.

It was acquired by the National Trust in 1958, but did not re-open to the public until an extensive renovation programme had been completed during the 1970s.

During the week, staff will also be showing off the Victorian laundry and telling visitors about the Victorian influences in the gardens.
