Historic hall opens as £30m hotel

A £30M refurbishment of historic Raithwaite Hall, billed as transforming it into the crown jewel of the North Yorkshire coast, was completed yesterday as it opened its doors to the public.

The new 45-bedroom luxury hotel in Sandsend, Whitby, is set within 80 acres of countryside on the edge of the North York Moors. Its whose lavish interiors have been supplied by DEPA UK Ltd, which provided the furniture and fittings for the Savoy in London.

It is claimed the transformation of Raithwaite Hall into the country retreat has created 100 jobs.

It is the latest chapter in the astonishing history of the stately home, which a multi-millionaire shipping tycoon bequeathed to his Swiss nurse in 1991 – making her one of the richest women in Britain.

North Yorkshire developers the Skelwith Group bought the land in 2008 when she gave up the running of the estate.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “Raithwaite Hall is going to be a great asset to the county and the hotel will also be a terrific base for visitors wishing to explore the rest of the county.

“Yorkshire already has one of the strongest tourism economies in the country and Raithwaite Hall really adds to what we have to offer our visitors.”
