Historic manor house plays host to a library for the modern age

A new self-service library based in one of the oldest buildings in Bradford has opened.

Bolling Hall Library, which opened its doors this week, replaces the former East Bowling Library.

The newly-redecorated room, which previously housed a virtual tour of the museum, offers hundreds of new titles.

Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, Bradford Council’s executive member for culture, said: “The historic manor house provides a splendid location for the library. I’m delighted that local people now have this facility. The full programme of events and activities will also much improve the library service for local people.

“Combining the museum and the library in the same building is cost effective for the council but at the same time enhances the visitor experience for both museum and library users. Visitors will be able to look around the museum, borrow a book or browse a newspaper in the library, and enjoy the hall’s beautiful garden.”

Customers can borrow and return books using one self-service unit. They can also reserve books online using two public access computers, which will be available for general internet access for 30-minute sessions.

The library shares opening hours with the refurbished Bolling Hall Museum which are: 11am to 4pm Wednesday to Friday; 10am to 5pm Saturday; and midday to 5pm Sunday.

Staff are based at the library from Wednesday to Friday and paper forms will be available for customers who wish to make an inquiry outside staffed hours.

The museum’s refurbishment includes new signage, improved lighting and security around the building, and work to the exterior pathways to improve disabled access.

Staff have given some of the fixings and furniture – including a chandelier in the Georgian dining room –a conservation clean using specialist equipment.
