Historic town spreads the message

TRADERS in a North Yorkshire market town have launched a new online campaign to boost visitors and help weather the economic storm.

The group of more than 50 independent traders in Pickering are producing an on-line brochure spelling out to tourists and shoppers the attractions of the historic town.

A hard-copy brochure is also being produced to distribute throughout Pickering.

William Oxley, deputy mayor of the town and member of the Pride in Pickering group, said; "We have more than 50 independent traders and we aim to tell the public what makes those businesses special.

"Pickering has so much to offer, especially through its shops – you can buy almost anything in the town.

"We want to encourage businesses to work together for the benefit of the entire area."

Town clerk Andrew Husband said: "The intention is to promote spending time and money in Pickering. Studies show that for every 10 spent in a local independent shop, 25 is generated for the local economy, compared to 14 spent in national supermarkets.

The brochure is planned to be published early in the new year.
