Hole new way to start day

Residents in the town of Schmalkalden, in central Germany, woke yesterday to an unfamiliar landscape, courtesy of a massive sink hole that had appeared in the middle of a residential street.

The crater, 65 feet deep, swallowed a car and part of a garage but

nobody was injured. About 23 buildings and homes were evacuated as authorities tried to ascertain the cause of the crater, which last night remained unclear.

Authorities plan to fill the hole with gravel.
