Home-built organ tunes up for charity
A RETIRED engineer has raised more than £1,700 for charity in the last five weeks alone by playing the organ he built from scratch to shoppers at Wentworth Garden Centre.
Roger Shaw, 63, began building the 750-part organ a decade ago, using recycled metal and wood he collected from near his home in Clifton, Rotherham. Since completing the instrument four years ago, he has regularly played it for charity, raising money for causes including Children in Need, Help for Heroes and Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice.
He said: "I've always loved fairground organ music. When I was a child I used to be fascinated by them, and spent more time looking at them than going on the rides. I can't believe the generosity of the public. They've been absolutely marvellous and I feel quite humbled."
