Homes plan for failed pub opposed

A number of tenants have struggled to make a go of the Wheelhouse pub on Beverley Road, Hull, which is now vacant.

The plans – a reduction from the original 16 proposed – would see 12 two-storey houses built on the site, which is on the corner with Parkstone Road.

However, the proposals have sparked objections from parents of children attending Parkstone Primary, who were able to park in the pub’s car park, as well as neighbours concerned about loss of light and outlook, who claim that it is “overdevelopment”.

Planning officers at Hull Council are not supporting the plan, claiming there has not been enough evidence provided about why new houses should be built there and not on an alternative site which presents less of a flood risk.

The site is defined as being in a “high hazard” area.

They say other sites including the former Goodfellows on Sharp Street and the Orchard Park pub are still available for housing.

They added the extra 12 houses do not bring wider “sustainability” benefits, outweighing the flood risk.

Councillors will meet on Wednesday to discuss the plans.
