Hope in store as businesses eye fashion week windfall

BUSINESSES in Hull are hoping for a windfall from the Hull BID Fashion Week later this month.

A series of events will begin on Monday, April 25, featuring Hull’s three main shopping centres, independent retailers, major stores and local designers.

It is hoped the increased footfall and interest generated by the event will provide a boost for a range of city centre businesses as it coincides with two bank holidays and a Royal wedding.

Kathryn Shillito, city centre manager at Hull BID, said: “The event is all about helping to generate business for fashion retailers in Hull city centre.

“But the benefits will also extend to other retailers including hair and beauty salons and we’re confident that by launching the activities on Easter Monday we will attract the crowds that will also benefit cafe bars and restaurants.”

The event will start with the first of a series of displays at St Stephen’s Shopping Centre. Princes Quay Shopping Centre will present a fashion show with a Kate Middleton theme on the eve of her marriage to Prince William, and will also host a children’s fashion show.

One of the most eye-catching parts of the week is likely to be the finale on Saturday, April 30, however, when Holy Trinity Church hosts the final parade. It is thought to be the first time a church has played host to a fashion show.

The programme has been welcomed by retailers throughout the city, from high-profile national chains to Hull’s independent businesses.

The event at the church have been welcomed by Beasleys of Hepworth’s Arcade, which sells cult and classic men’s and women’s clothing.

“The Hull BID Fashion Week is a great event and is exactly what businesses like ours need,” said Frances Beasley. “We were really pleased to hear about the church hosting some of the events. It’s certainly different and we hope it will attract more people to this part of the city centre.”

Eric Silver, of Leonard Silver menswear in Savile Street, added: “A high profile event like this is always good for businesses like ours and we’re looking forward to taking part. It will help to focus people’s minds on the fashion that is available in Hull and it is a big opportunity for independent retailers”
