Hospital bus cut in timetable changes

A WEEKEND bus journey that ferries patients and their families between two seaside town hospitals is being withdrawn next weekend after NHS trust chiefs said not enough people use it.

The managers added that people who want to spend longer visiting their loved ones should also benefit from timetable revisions that have moved the time of the last bus back to Bridlington Hospital from Scarborough Hospital by 45 minutes.

More Bridlington patients are now treated at the Scarborough site in Scalby Road, Newby, after controversial changes centralised more services on the bigger site.

Trust chiefs responded by laying on the shuttle buses but yesterday they announced that, following patient feedback and a review, the timetable would change on Monday.

The shuttle bus is operated by Dial-a-Ride, which runs the regular service for patients and visitors, between Bridlington and Scarborough Hospitals.

The main change is that the 7.45am from Bridlington and the 9am service back from Scarborough, will no longer run on Saturdays and Sundays.

"This is due to lack of use," said a Trust spokesman.

They had responded to patients requests by arranging for the 7pm from Scarborough to depart at 7.45pm to allow visitors greater flexibility, the spokesman added.

Revised timetables have been produced and distributed around Scarborough and Bridlington Hospitals.

Dial-a-Ride's contract has been extended until a new tender for the service is awarded, probably in November.

Under the new timetable, the shuttle service departs from Scarborough Hospital main entrance at 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm and 7.45pm.

From Bridlington Hospital main entrance, departure times are 7.45am,10am, noon, 2pm, 4pm, and 6pm.

However, this weekend will be the last when the 7.45am service will run.
