Hospital is cleared over man's death

A BIG ISSUE seller who died with four times the lethal dose of morphine in his blood died from natural causes, a coroner ruled yesterday.

Mick Teale, 47, of Banksfield Avenue, Mytholmroyd, died at Calderdale Royal Hospital on April 16 last year.

In November, West Yorkshire deputy coroner Paul Marks ordered that an inquest into his death be adjourned for investigations to be carried out into how he was treated at the hospital's Accident and Emergency department.

The hearing at Halifax Town Hall heard claims the 47-year-old had been left untreated for five hours and relatives questioned why Mr Teale, a registered heroin-user, was not issued with medication to combat the morphine when he was admitted

But following a report from independent medical expert, Nigel Zoltie, Mr Marks said there had been "no lost opportunity'' to treat Mr Teale and the hospital's care corresponded to recognised standards.

He said: "I am overwhelming in favour of death being due to septicaemia rather than from an overdose of diamorphine.''
