House steeped in history is adorned with festive flowers

TRADITIONAL Christmas decorations have been put up at the 17th-century Revolution House in Chesterfield, ahead of a carol concert at the thatched cottage tonight.

The historic house in Old Whittington has been adorned with real holly, ivy and evergreens. A flower festival was also launched on Saturday, December 17, which will run for a fortnight.

Coun Nick Stringer, executive member for leisure, culture and tourism at Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “Revolution House is a nationally historic important building and its old, traditional furnishings and furniture are always of interest.

“I’d urge anyone to go along and enjoy the festive decorations and experience the special Christmas events on offer.”

Tonight, visitors to Revolution House can enjoy Christmas carols being performed by members of Holymoorside Brass Band. The event is free and runs from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

Revolution House is open from 11am to 4pm every day, up to and including Christmas Eve. The house, three miles north of Chesterfield, takes its name from the revolution of 1688.

History has it that the Earl of Devonshire, the Earl of Danby and John D’Arcy met in the cottage to begin planning their part in events which led to the overthrow of King James II.
