How Duchess was pacified with second place at races

THE Queen's love of horse racing, and the sport of kings, remains legendary. Less so is the enthusiasm of the Duchess of Cornwall who graced York to watch her horse Pacify finish a close second in the opening race of the 2016 Dante festival.

Her facial expressions revealed a range of emotions as Pacify launched his challenge under jockey Fran Berry. First the exciting anticipation, one that all racehorse owners appreciate, at the prospect that they might win and then the disappointment – that dreaded ‘drat’ moment – when the winning post comes a stride too soon.

The result continued the run of seconditis being both enjoyed and endured by the Duchess and Prince Charles after their horse Carntop was narrowly beaten at Lingfield last Saturday. However the colt still holds an entry for next month’s Epsom Derby.

The Duchess was accompanied on the Knavesmire by the Queen’s racing manager John Warren who famously lost his cool in the Royal box when Her Majesty’s Estimate won the Ascot Gold Cup in 2013.

Other VIPs included Prince Andrew who presented the trophies after the Duke of York Clipper Logistic Stakes.
