Hull nets place in list of Europe’s top aqua attractions

The world’s only submarium has made it to a list of top 10 European aquaria.

The Deep in Hull, which is enjoying a bumper year after the arrival of penguins from Texas, was in ninth in the TripAdvisor poll. It lays claim to being the only submarium - an aquarium with a vast range of sea creatures.

Chester Zoo was in sixth place in the world list of zoos and was voted second in Europe and the best in the UK. Two other UK zoos in the European top 10 were Colchester Zoo in Essex in eighth and Paignton Zoo in Devon in ninth. The awards are based on millions of reviews and opinions on the TripAdvisor website.

The Deep’s chief executive, Colin Brown, said: “It is fantastic news to see The Deep in the top 10 European aquariums, and to be the only one in the UK is a real achievement. 2014 has been a fantastic year for us following the arrival of the penguins in March and we have already welcomed over 260,000 visitors. Customer satisfaction is of paramount importance and to be rated so highly is a credit to the team here.”

The world title went to Monterey Bay Aquarium in California, while the top European aquarium was Oceanario de Lisboa in Lisbon.
