Hundreds of homes to be built on old Yorkshire Main colliery site at Edlington

A FORMER pit site in South Yorkshire is set to be transformed with the development of up to 375 houses.

Doncaster Council has approved plans for part of the old Yorkshire Main colliery in Edlington, which closed in 1985 in the wake of the Miners’ Strike.

The development, which will be known as Warmsworth Gate, will also include a pub, landscaping and public open space.

The proposals have been put forward by Haworth Estates which specialises in redeveloping brownfield and derelict sites.

Tim Love, Harworth’s Director of Strategic Land, said: “This development forms part of Doncaster’s wider regeneration programme and supports the continuing housing shortfall in the local area.

“New housing remains in short supply in the UK and this consent is testament to our commitment to providing quality homes to areas where there is a severe lack of housing stock.”

Harworth is carrying out work at a number of sites in Doncaster, including development of a solar farm at the former Askern Colliery and plans for another in Thorne. Construction of 1,200 new homes planned at Torne Park, the former Rossington Colliery site, also began this year. The Rossington regeneration project will take up to ten years to complete.
