Hundreds honour fallen corporal

Hundreds of people paid their respects yesterday at the funeral of a soldier killed in Afghanistan.

Shops, factories and pubs emptied and traffic came to a standstill as people lined the streets for the funeral of Corporal Harvey Holmes in his home town of Hyde, Greater Manchester.

In scenes reminiscent of Wootton Bassett, where it has become a tradition for locals to pay their respects, red roses where thrown and placed on top of the hearse bearing Cpl Holmes' coffin, draped in the Union flag, and applause rang out as it made its way to the church.

The 22-year-old, serving with the 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment, died in an explosion on May 2, close to Patrol Base Waterloo, in Sangin, Helmand Province.
