Hunt begins to find help with tower restoration

A NEW home is needed for the clock tower from the former Beechfield School in Doncaster.

Council chiefs in the town are looking for people and organisations with experience in restoring historic features.

They should also have a use for the clock tower in mind once the restoration is completed.

The historic clock tower was built when the Girls and Infants School opened in 1927.

Located above the ventilation shaft, the clock was a “signature element” of the school, which cost £28,000 to build and equip.

The school closed in 1973 and had been redundant for “many years” before it was demolished in November 2009 to make way for Doncaster’s new civic and cultural quarter.

Doncaster mayor Peter Davies said: “The civic and cultural quarter is the future of the area, however it is important we preserve and celebrate our history.

“It would be wonderful if we could find the imposing clock tower a new home where it can be viewed and enjoyed by visitors for years to come.”

During the demolition of the school, contractors carefully removed the clock tower and put it into storage.

By knocking down the old school, College Road was extended to Chequer Road to improve access.

Housing and other developments will also feature on the site of the old school as part of the regeneration plans
