Hunt for hit and run drivers after man, 39, killed walking home

A PEDESTRIAN died from his injuries after being struck by three cars, including two which failed to stop, in Yorkshire early yesterday.

Detectives are now searching for those two motorists as part of their investigation into the death of Stephen Wood, 39, from Ilkley, who was walking on the A65 Skipton Road between Ilkley and Addingham after spending the evening at a pub.

The incident happened just after midnight. Police appealed for anyone with suspicions about the identity of the drivers involved to contact them.

A woman, apparently driving the car which first hit Mr Wood and who stopped at the scene, was interviewed yesterday.

Last night officers refused to reveal further details of the circumstances of the death, but Det Sgt Carole Clayton said: "We would like to hear from anyone who was drinking with him or saw him after he left the pub.

"We are urging the drivers of both of the cars that didn't stop after colliding with Stephen to contact us. I would also ask anyone who has suspicions about a friend or relative being involved to let us know.

"We are currently examining CCTV in the area with a view to identifying the drivers involved."

In Scunthorpe two teenagers were killed and another was fighting for his life in hospital last night following a head-on crash involving a car and a lorry.

Rescue crews from the Corus steelworks joined emergency services to help following the crash, on a private road leading through the plant. It is open for public access.

A boy and girl, both 16, were passengers in a blue Honda Civic which hit a DAF lorry on Dawes Lanes. Another boy, also 16 and a passenger in the car, was flown by air ambulance to Hull Royal Infirmary with life-threatening injuries.

The lorry driver, 30, was in hospital with serious injuries and the Honda driver, 18, was also hurt but was arrested by police.

A police spokesman said: "Officers would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or either of the vehicles before the collision.

"In particular, we would like to speak to the driver of a silver car which was overtaken by the blue car involved in the collision on Dawes Lane prior to the collision."

The teenagers who lost their lives will not be named until family members are told.
