Hunt for thugs who punched woman

YOBS punched a middle-aged woman in front of her teenage daughter in an unprovoked attack in Scarborough, according to police who appealed for witnesses yesterday.

The woman, aged 50, and the 18-year-old were walking at midnight along North Marine Road, past the fire station, when the incident happened last Friday.

Police said the victims were approached by two youths and a girl aged between 16 and 18. One thug threw a beer can hitting the woman on her head, then verbally abused her daughter before punching the woman in her stomach, causing rib injuries.

The attacker was white with short dark hair aged about 16 to 18. He was wearing a light-coloured top and jeans. The other youth was wearing a black T-shirt. The girl was slim with long dark hair.

Pc Liam Barnes, who is investigating the assault, said: "This unprovoked attack is appalling and will not be tolerated in our communities.I would like to appeal to the public to help us trace whoever is responsible.

"The victims were very shaken up by the incident and we are determined to bring whoever is responsible to justice."
