Husband ‘rises from the dead’ after heart attack

Barry Tate, 48, had a remarkable recovery after he "died" on the floor at work and spent a week in a coma.

The warehouse manager had complained of indigestion and a burning in his chest while getting ready for work.

It is now thought this was the beginning of a heart attack, but he still cycled eight miles to work where he collapsed 10 minutes after arriving.

Two first-aiders rushed to resuscitate him until paramedics arrived but he stopped breathing and his heart stopped beating.

Over the next 45 minutes, paramedics used a defibrillator to repeatedly shock his heart into re-starting and found a weak pulse on the fifth desperate attempt.

His wife Sue Tate, of Halifax, said: "Apparently I was screaming. He must have heard me screaming and that's what made him come back."

He was put into a medically-induced coma at Leeds General Infirmary after being transferred from Calderdale Royal Hospital.

Doctors kept trying to bring him out of the coma over the next seven days and on the sixth attempt, he astounded medical staff by waking up and giving his wife a "lovely smile", reducing nurses to tears.

Sue said: "I just felt utter despair. I didn't think he was coming back.” But after the sixth attempt she said: "I swear I've never had a feeling like it. It was the happiest emotion I've ever felt in my life.”
