Industrial past of city canal is captured on canvas

A SEQUENCE of paintings showing the regeneration of Sheffield’s once-derelict canal basin yesterday went on show at the city’s Town Hall.

The pictures were painted by artist Norah K Rogerson, who visited the site frequently between 1989 and 1995.

She said: “Drawing and painting on a building site is always difficult. There is constant movement and change.

“The breeze whips up dust and dirt which when combined with diesel fume is very unpleasant. Interiors are cold, draughty, filthy dark and dangerous.

“However, I was glad I was there and that the work was done.”

Over the years Ms Rogerson’s paintings have been displayed in the Terminal Building at Victoria Quays, the old Ruskin Gallery and at the Winter Garden.

She said she is hoping to be at the new exhibition as much as possible to discuss the paintings.

The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Sylvia Dunkley, said: “I am a big fan of these paintings and have seen them exhibited a number of times before.

“It therefore gives me great pleasure to welcome Norah and her paintings to the Town Hall where I hope many people get to see the wonderful insight she has made into depicting our industrial past here in Sheffield.”

The exhibition will be on show for a fortnight at the Town Hall, which is open daily.
