Inquest hears of police request

A CORONER yesterday adjourned an inquest which heard how a great-grandmother died from maggot-infested ulcers following a gallstones operation.

Irene Smeaton, 86, had lived independently at her Doncaster home for 15 years but was admitted to Doncaster Royal Infirmary in summer 2006 after a fall.

A first post-mortem examination concluded she died of “old age” in September but her furious family called in the police. A second post-mortem examination by a Home Office pathologist found death was due to blood poisioning from the ulcers, the hearing heard. Coroner Neil Cameron finished hearing all the evidence in the case yesterday afternoon.

The inquest is expected to end on Friday.
