It's Britain's most potholed road - unless you know different

A COMMUTER route in Hull has been nominated as Britain's most potholed road – with more than 300 holes in a single 400-yard stretch.

Drivers are forced to dodge 319 gaps on the surface of Priory Road, which has been almost destroyed by the cold snap earlier this month.

But critics say its condition is also down to a lack of care from Hull City Council and East Riding Council, who are responsible for its upkeep.

Priory Road is a busy commuter route between Hull and Cottingham, regularly used by buses and lorries. But despite the volume of daily traffic and the deployment of four full-time council repair teams, drivers have had to negotiate the potholes since before Christmas.

Scores of broken wheel trims scattered on a grass verge at the worst part of the road is a tell-tale sign of the damage being caused to vehicles.

An East Riding Council spokesman said: "We have carried out temporary repairs in Priory Road and will continue to do so when there are dangerous defects.

"However, it is unlikely any major work will be carried out until the weather improves."

David Weeks, director of the Asphalt Industry Alliance, said motorists were facing double the potholes they were than in 2007.

He said: "Money would be better spent on preventative maintenance by resurfacing whole roads instead of patch and repair."

AA president Edmund King said: "Once again the fabric of our local roads is a major cause for concern, with surfaces crumbling and drivers and riders at risk of damage to their vehicles and even themselves.

"We have gone from a salt crisis to a hole crisis. We have indeed had a bad winter, but the state of our roads has visually worsened in the past few weeks.

"Ultimately, we will all pay more to once again patch and mend the potholes and then pay out compensation, rather than fixing the underlying poor condition of many of our roads.

"I urge all drivers and riders to take care. An innocuous looking puddle may actually be a deep pothole that places you and your vehicle at risk."

Hull City Council and East Riding Council say motorists should notify them of potholes. The two councils expect to spend more than 10m pounds on road repairs this winter.
